Georgia authorities on Thursday were investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting in Savannah. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said a police officer killed 29-year-old Charles Smith — a handcuffed and apparently armed man who had been arrested on outstanding warrants — after he allegedly tried to kick out the window of a patrol car. Savannah Chatham Metropolitan interim Police Chief Julie Tolbert requested that the GBI handle the investigation.
A little over 100 people gathered and marched peacefully Thursday evening on Augusta Avenue, the Savannah street where the shooting occurred, many of them calling for peace and shouting: "We want justice." Police were present in the area, but they were not marching alongside the crowd. Smith's mother was present at the rally.
