Barack Obama will meet Attorney General Monday to discuss plans for the introduction of gun controls, the president announced in his weekly address.
“I get too many letters from parents, and teachers, and kids, to sit around and do nothing,” he said, adding that tackling the U.S. epidemic of gun violence was “one piece of unfinished business.”
It comes after Lynch told NBC’s Meet The Press last month that Obama would specifically call on Congress to review certain gun control measures, especially in the wake of the San Bernardino massacre.
\“A few months ago, I directed my team at the White House to look into any new actions I can take to help reduce gun violence,” Obama said in his address. “On Monday, I’ll meet with our Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, to discuss our options.”
He also appealed for help in tackling opposition to reform of gun controls.
“The gun lobby is loud and well organized in its defense of effortlessly available guns for anyone,” he said. “The rest of us are going to have to be just as passionate and well organized in our defense of our kids. That’s the work of citizenship – to stand up and fight for the change that we seek. I hope you’ll join me in making America safer for all of our children.”
Obama began his address by saying he was “fired up” for the year head.
