Republican Senate candidate Ed Gillespie is asking Virginians to be patient and let the final vote tallying process play out after his apparent razor-thin loss to Democratic Sen. Mark Warner.

“We will be watching the results closely so that we can ensure Virginians have confidence in the accuracy of the results,” Gillespie said in a statement Wednesday.

NBC News projected Warner the apparent winner in a race that was much closer than most expected. An "apparent winner" means that NBC News has tallied enough votes to indicate that a candidate has won the race, but the results may well depend upon a potential recount or final official tallies.

Gillespie noted in the statement that a recount cannot be requested until the official results are tallied.
