House Speaker John Boehner is inviting the new president of Ukraine to address a joint meeting of Congress next week.

President Petro Poroshenko was elected in May after a wave of protests swept out the regime of Viktor Yanukovych.

"Having President Poroshenko address Congress is another signal of our steadfast commitment to the aspirations of his people," Speaker Boehner said. "It will be an honor and a privilege to welcome him to the United States Capitol."

The joint meeting of Congress is scheduled for September 18.
