A two-star general will investigate the murky circumstances around Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's departure from his base in Afghanistan in 2009, which led to his capture by the Taliban, a defense official told NBC News Saturday.
Bergdahl was released on May 31 in exchange for five Taliban commanders previously held at the Guantanamo Bay military detention facility in Cuba.

The defense official did not name the general in charge of the investigation.
Bergdahl returned to the United States on Friday. He was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, where he will continue the reintegration process started at a U.S. military hospital in Germany.
Some of Bergdahl's fellow former soldiers have described him as a deserter who left the remote outpost in eastern Afghanistan in June 2009 before he was captured.
