It looks like Apple will finally be able to compete with Samsung when it comes to screen size.

The company is planning to release two new iPhones this year, according to unnamed sources cited by the Wall Street Journal, both of them boasting screens larger than the current 4-inch display on the iPhone 5s.

One model will feature a screen larger than 4.5 inches, the Wall Street Journal reported, while the other will have a screen larger than 5 inches.

“Apple declines to comment on rumors and speculation,” Teresa Brewer, an Apple spokesperson, told CNBC.

In the past, Apple has been hesitant to embrace larger screens, even as rivals have gained market share by doing exactly that. Samsung's top-of-the-line phone, the Galaxy S4, features a 5-inch screen, while the company's "phablet" — a cross between a phone and a tablet — measures 5.5 inches across.

Both new models will sport metal casings like the current iPhone 5s, the sources told the Wall Street Journal, while the company will discontinue the colorful plastic backing featured on the iPhone 5c.
