A man who pleaded guilty to beating two competitors with a wrench in an attempt to take over their ice cream truck route was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Fernando Esparza, 53, was sentenced Wednesday for allegedly attacking competitors Juana and Luis Marrero on March 27, 2004, as the couple and their granddaughter returned to a Bronx truck depot.

Esparza pleaded guilty last month to two counts of assault.

Authorities said the Marreros were in an ongoing dispute with Esparza over routes for their competing ice cream truck operations.

The attack left Juana Marrero, 66, with multiple skull fractures and internal bleeding. She was hospitalized for more than a month. Luis Marrero also was injured.
