A truck carrying a load of sand slammed into a passenger bus Friday in Cameroon, killing at least 34 people, the government said.

The accident occurred on the northwestern outskirts of the capital, Yaounde, according to a statement issued by the prime minister’s office. Further details weren’t immediately available.

At least 800 people died in road accidents last year in Cameroon, according to the west African nation’s transport ministry.

Across the region, frequently ill-trained drivers pilot rickety vehicles over poorly maintained roads, with often deadly results.

Even the most heavily traveled roads in the country of 17 million people usually consist of only two lanes, meaning vehicles traveling at high speeds pass close, heading in opposite directions.
