A suicide car bomber hit a Canadian military convoy in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday, witnesses and a police officer said. There was no immediate word on casualties.

Amanullah Khan, a police officer at the scene, said that a suicide attacker plowed his car into the military convoy in Kandahar city.

An Associated Press reporter saw the wreckage of the car next to two Canadian military vehicles that were burning.

Soldiers fired warning shots to ward off onlookers.

Thick black smoke rose from the wrecked vehicles and there were secondary explosions.
