Authorities arrested and charged a man Sunday for his alleged involvement in an attack outside the U.S. consulate in Istanbul, the state-run Anatolia news agency reported.

The man, identified only as Dursun P., was being held on a charge of membership in a terror organization, the agency said.

It was not immediately clear what role he is alleged to have played in the July 9 attack, in which gunmen opened fire on police guarding the consulate building, killing three officers. Three attackers also died in a shootout with police.

The suspect is the first to be formally arrested in the investigation. The agency reported that police said they charged two other people, but did not specify what the charge was, and the two were released pending court hearings.

Istanbul Governor Muammer Guler said Sunday that 12 people in total have been detained for questioning as part of the investigation into the attack.

No further information about the suspects was available, and court officials in Istanbul refused comment.

Authorities and reports have said the suspects included a man who allegedly drove the attackers to the consulate, and another who allegedly held several telephone calls with the attackers.
