WOODLAND HILLS, Calif., Aug. 30, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has announced the delivery of the 8,000th LTN-101 FLAGSHIP™ Inertial Reference Unit (IRU), which provides highly accurate navigation information for commercial aircraft.

"This major milestone speaks to the quality of our LTN-101 IRU product," said Gorik Hossepian, vice president of navigation and positioning systems for Northrop Grumman's Navigation Systems Division. "The LTN-101 has a long history of dependability on aircraft around the world, and Northrop Grumman takes great pride in providing our customers with 8,000 units and counting."

Since its certification in 1993, the LTN-101 FLAGSHIP™ IRU has logged millions of flight hours on such leading commercial aircraft as the Airbus single aisle and long range families, Bombardier CRJ, Q400 and CL604, and the Saab 2000.

The LTN-101 FLAGSHIP™ system utilizes Four Mode Laser Gyro technology, composed of two Zero-lock™ laser gyros (ZLG) in a single housing. Undithered and 40 percent smaller than conventional ring laser gyros, the Four Mode Laser Gyro provides high accuracy, high reliability and reduced costs. The LTN-101 also employs the patented AIME™ algorithm that integrates inertial and Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements to provide highly accurate aircraft position.

Northrop Grumman has experience in development and support of all current production gyro technologies. Besides its unique Zero-lock™ gyros, it produces spinning mass gyros, ring laser gyros, fiber-optic gyros, micro-electro-mechanical-system gyros, and hemispheric resonator gyros.

Northrop Grumman Corporation is a leading global security company whose 120,000 employees provide innovative systems, products, and solutions in aerospace, electronics, information systems, shipbuilding and technical services to government and commercial customers worldwide.
