A gold coin was dropped in a Salvation Army red kettle in Houston.

The coin was put into a kettle outside a Sam's Club in the 5300 block of South Rice Avenue on Wednesday night.

Salvation Army Greater Houston Area Command officials said it was wrapped inside a $1 bill with a note that read, "A child is born, Jesus!"

"Receiving a gold coin is quite special, so we are very excited about this happening here in Houston," Maj. Roman Leal said.

The $50 gold coin is valued at more than $1,100.

The Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign is the largest and oldest charitable fundraiser of its kind in the United States. The money raised locally benefit programs and services the Salvation Army operates in Harris, Fort Bend and Montgomery counties.

About 30,000 children and seniors have registered to receive new unwrapped gifts from the Salvation Army this year through the annual Angel Tree program.
