PISCATAWAY, N.J., April 11, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and New Jersey One Call is pleased to announce that the Governor of the State of New Jersey, Chris Christie has officially proclaimed the month of April 2011 as New Jersey Underground Damage Prevention Month.

The State of New Jersey recognizes that the issue of public safety is a critical concern, and that underground facilities such as oil, water, sewerage, gas, electric, communication and cable lines represent a significant component of public safety.

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, which oversees the Underground Facilities Protection Act and in partnership with underground facility operators and the New Jersey Common Ground Alliance, will be engaging in a campaign to heighten public awareness as to the importance of damage prevention, and to promote the use of the One-Call Damage Prevention System.

Governor Christie commended the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and the underground facility personnel for their commitment to the safety of the New Jersey residents. Jim Holzer, Executive Director of New Jersey One Call praised Governor Christie for his proclamation and applauded his office in their assistance in helping the Board of Public Utilities and New Jersey One Call raise awareness of the importance of calling before digging whether you are a contractor, excavator or a homeowner.

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and New Jersey One Call urge all New Jersey residents to call 811 before digging. 811 has been designated as the National dialing code dedicated to access State one-call centers. If you are digging in New Jersey you must call the One Call before breaking ground, it's the law. Then wait three full business days to allow participating owners of buried facilities the time to mark their lines with stakes or paint.
