A bus driver in India allegedly mowed down 17 passengers Wednesday, leaving seven of them dead, after a disagreement about fares, media reports said.

The Hindustan Times reported that the passengers, who were travelling to the Keladevi temple, had gotten off after an argument with the driver. Some of them allegedly lobbed rocks at the private bus and attacked the driver when it stopped near a gas station.

The passengers continued to the temple on foot, the report said, but the driver allegedly followed them down the road and plowed into the group.

Among those reportedly killed was a young girl, the report said.

The Times said all of the victims were from the north-central city of Agra. The incident took place in Karauli, which is about 100 miles southwest of that city.

Indian authorities have opened a murder investigation and are searching for the driver, who allegedly fled the scene.
