Microsoft is investigating reports that some Xbox Live users have been tricked into handing over their credit card information to scammers, but insists that the gaming platform has not been hacked.
The reports surfaced today (Nov. 22), when the British paper The Sun wrote that cybercriminals hacked into thousands of customers' accounts in the United Kingdom and made off with millions of dollars.
"Nobody's been hacking our system," a Microsoft Xbox support representative told SecurityNewsDaily.
In a statement obtained by The Register, Microsoft said the problem is instead that cybercriminals are going after gamers by sending them rogue emails that redirect them to malicious Web pages where they are prompted to input email addresses and credit card numbers.
Microsoft said it is investigating complaints by Xbox Live customers and working with them to "resolve any unauthorized changes to their accounts resulting from phishing scams."
Microsoft is urging Xbox gamers to be wary of unsolicited emails, and to never hand over personally identifiable information to strangers. On its Xbox Support Twitter page, Microsoft is responding to complaints from concerned customers by directing them to the Account Security page on its website.
