Many gadgets and electronics are seasonal devices, with peak times to buy if you're looking for new features or want to save the most money. For some, though, there's no reason to wait. This overview of product cycles can help you plan your purchase of a new TV, laptop, table, or smartphone.

The Christian Science Monitor outlines which electronic products are "ripe" for buying now and which are past their prime:

Televisions, one of the most seasonal devices, are a good buy now, since most of the new TVs for 2012 are out; the site notes that 2012 is a great year overall for getting a new TV. PCWorld, quoting DealNews, says that 46- and 47-inch HDTVs have been dropping in price, but if you want the absolute best prices, wait until the holidays.

Thanks to updates earlier this year, tablets are also "in season" according to both Christian Science Monitor and DealNews, though the latter recommends looking for used or refurbished tablets now. (Buying refurbished can land you a great deal.)

As for laptops, wait until after Intel's new Ivy Bridge processor has hit the majority of computers (the chip for mainstream PCs is expected to be released next week). Prices may drop even further on Ivy Bridge laptops already out and older Sandy Bridge-based laptops should be discounted even further. (We've noted before that July to September is usually a good time to buy computers.)

Always the right time to buy, because they're not seasonal: smartphones other than the iPhone and e-readers.
