Tomorrow may be Halloween in real life, but virtual tricks and treats are already plentiful. And if weather keeps some ghosts and goblins indoors this year, here's a rundown of some innovative apps for the witching hour.

  • It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown : A flip-through book told in the television characters' voices, with opportunities to treat-or-treat next to Linus and Lucy, this is a companion to the acclaimed A Charlie Brown Christmas app. There's one trick in this otherwise nostalgic Halloween treat, however: the interactive story contains in-app purchases, which might be enough to scare some parents off. Good grief! iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, $1.99 (on sale)
  • Mask Jumble Halloween : Kids can test out costume choices by trying on witch, pirate, clown and other masks via a camera that projects their image on the screen. Touching the screen lets kids add to and customize the mask. iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, $.99
  • iLuv Drawing Monsters: For kids who love step-by-step instructions, this app will help them create clever monsters scary good enough to elicit screeches of delight from their parents or friends. There's an option to draw freehand on blank pages after practicing the steps, and you can save, print, and tape to the fridge. iPad, $1.99
  • And, for adults only: iMut8r is freakish fun for those not afraid to see ghoulish versions of themselves or friends. Developed by a Hollywood special makeup effect company, users can tweak photos into zombies, werewolfs, demons, etc. so realistic that it's probably too freaky for most kids. iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, $.99
