The gun debate heats up on Capitol Hill. Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA) joins "The Ed Show" to define his party's message on assault weapons tonight at 8p/11pET on MSNBC.

The gun debate heats up on Capitol Hill: President Obama comes out for an assault weapons ban and the NRA its first statement following the Newtown massacre.

Tonight, Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA) joins Ed to define his party’s message on assault weapons. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) will explain his call for Congress to ban high-capacity clips.

And Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) said she would “embarrass” the president to get common sense gun laws. Later in the hour, Ed will ask her if she’s happy with his endorsement of an assault weapons ban.

Then, Social Security is officially on the table in fiscal cliff negotiations. David Cay Johnston, columnist for Reuters, Pulitzer Prize winner and author of “Perfectly Legal” and “Free Lunch,” tells Ed if there’s any way that makes any sense.

And Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) explains how progressives intend to fight.

Plus, Bob Shrum, Democratic Strategist, and Joan Walsh, Salon’s Editor at Large, and author of “What’s The Matter With White People? Why We Long For A Golden Age That Never Was,” will critique Speaker John Boehner’s “Plan B.”

And a real scare in Syria turns into a real happy ending. Tonight, we’ll tell you how NBC’s Richard Engel escaped from his kidnappers.
