LAS VEGAS — There's no shortage of glitz and glamour at the Consumer Electronics Show, but most is found in the sprawling showrooms of the big TV manufacturers where $20,000 TVs take center stage. But tonight (Jan. 10), fashion with technology like LED lights and nano fabrics hit the runway at FashionWare 2013.
Actress Kelly LeBrock who made her debut in the film "Weird Science" emceed the event. The clothes ranged from technology that is available today to experimental prototypes.
The show started with a trio of models wearing short cutout dresses that would be at home in the "Star Wars" bar. But the fashion quickly came down to earth and included pants with hidden pockets that charged smartphones and a mechanized pop-up baby stroller that also had a port for an iPod.
Several of the dresses lit up, such as the several gowns trimmed in LED lights from Moon Berlin and a playful rainbow-lit dress designed especially for the show by toymaker LiteBrix. And a pair of orange platform shoes were made using a 3-D printer.
While the designs presented at the show were in part futuristic, expect to see clothes with built-in technology in the near future. Organizer of the event, Robin Raskin, said, "We're about to see an entire new industry take off based on high tech fashion."
