A digital camera had better bring some extras to the table to compete against the convenience of smartphones. Nikon's latest models entice amateur photographers with durability, zoom lenses, and even Wi-Fi connectivity in an effort to get people to reach beyond their phones.
The $350 Coolpix AW110 is waterproof down to 59 feet, can handle a drop from 6.7 feet and withstands temps down to 14° F. It also uses GPS to tag photos and can transmit image files over Wi-Fi. For people not quite as adventurous, the $120 Coolpix S31 is waterproof to 16.5 feet and can take a 3.6-foot drop.
On the higher-end, the $450 Coolpix P520 offers a 42x optical zoom and 18.1 megapixels. It shoots 1080p video and includes a roomy 3.2-inch LCD, along with GPS and Wi-Fi. [See also, What Makes a High-Quality Camera? ]
The $120 Coolpix L28 seems like a bit of a throwback compared to the other new models, but sometimes a simple point-and-shoot is all you need. With 20.1 megapixels and a 5x optical zoom, it will definitely outperform a smartphone's optics. The L28 even uses AA batteries so you can add more power without plugging in and waiting for a recharge.
All models are available beginning in February.
