Two climbers on Mount Hood fell into a crevasse Thursday, killing one and injuring the other, authorities said.

The surviving climber, who suffered a broken arm and broken ribs, used a cell phone to call for help Thursday morning, and rescuers hiked to the crevasse near Sandy Glacier, said Detective Jim Strovink, spokesman for the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.

Later a National Guard helicopter lowered a medical team to the 8,500-foot level of Mount Hood, where they treated the surviving climber before taking him to a Portland hospital. The other climber, who suffered head and back injuries, died at the scene.

Authorities declined to identify the climbers because their relatives had not been notified, and said they were continuing to investigate.

Portland television stations reported the crevasse was about 100 feet deep.
