An explosion in a trash can in an Istanbul suburb killed two people and injured five as they left a wedding party early Thursday, television reports said.

Two relatives leaving the party were killed as they tried to get into their car shortly after midnight, CNN-Turk television reported. Five other people who were also leaving the party were injured in the blast in Pendik, on the outskirts of Istanbul, CNN-Turk television reported.

There was no immediate word on what caused the explosion. Kurdish, leftist and militant Islamic groups have carried out bombings in Istanbul in the past.

Blasts coincide with Kurdish attacks
On Tuesday, two explosions in trash cans in the popular resort city of Antalya slightly injured nine people. Police said the blasts could have been caused by bombs or exploding aerosol cans. The blasts come as Kurdish guerrillas have been stepping up their attacks in recent months.

The bloodiest blast was in mid-July, when an explosion on a minibus in the Aegean resort town of Kusadasi killed five people, including a British woman tourist and an Irish teenager.

Since May more than 50 rebels and 30 soldiers have been killed in fighting.
