HBO has announced the upcoming release of the fifth installment of its East of Main Street documentary series.
The soon-to-be-released installment, called East of Main Street: Taking the Lead, will be available May 1, to coincide with Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
East of Main Street is an ongoing series that explores the Asian-American experience through interviews from a wide range of perspectives. Previous installments have included interviews with children of Asian descent and Korean-American adoptees.
This time, the camera turns to the experiences of Asian-American actors and performers, and features the likes of Daniel Dae Kim, Aasif Mandvi, Lucy Liu, and B.D. Wong.
The documentary’s topic is apropos of the current media landscape. Shows like ABC's Fresh Off the Boat reflect a trend towards more inclusive, diverse programming and entertainment.
"This year, with so much attention being paid to racial and cultural diversity in Hollywood, we wanted to examine what it takes for Asian Americans to succeed in the entertainment industry,” said director and producer Jonathan Yi in a press release. Yi has also been involved in previous East of Main Street productions.
East of Main Street: Taking the Lead will be available on various HBO streaming services. Previous installments of East of Main Street are available on YouTube.
