A Georgia sheriff’s deputy who was shot and critically wounded in a shooting that claimed the life of another officer Sunday has died, authorities said Tuesday.
Peach County sheriff’s deputy Daryl Smallwood died Tuesday at a Macon hospital, his former department, the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office, said in a statement. The Peach County district attorney also confirmed the news to NBC affiliate WXIA in Atlanta.
Smallwood, 39, was on life support since the shooting that occurred after he and Deputy Patrick Sondron, 41, responded to a report of a neighbor who was upset by a cookout and had allegedly threatened the revelers with a weapon, authorities have said.
As the deputies approached the alleged threatening neighbor’s home to conduct an interview "they took fire" and both were hit, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent J.T. Ricketson said. Sondron later died.
The suspected shooter was shot and wounded by other officers who arrived, Ricketson said. Ralph Stanley Elrod, 57, was served with warrants for murder and assault at the hospital where he was being treated Monday, WXIA reported.
Security footage taken inside Elrod’s home shows him putting on a bullet resistant vest after shooting the deputies, the station reported.
