A 32-year-old hiker died after falling into a crevasse in Oregon’s Cascade Mountains over the weekend, authorities said Monday.

Thomas Fountain, 32, and his wife, Alison, 29, were hiking 10,000-foot Mount Jefferson, southeast of Portland, when Thomas fell on Sunday, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

The couple was stranded in difficult terrain, the release said, while more than a dozen rescue climbers and a Coast Guard helicopter were dispatched to find them.

Alison was able to text with the responding crews, but by the time they found Thomas on Monday morning at 9:00 a.m., he had died from injuries sustained during the fall, NBC affiliate KGW reported.

Alison, who was not injured, was airlifted on the mountain, the station reported.
