LONDON — A young intruder “who had been drinking” was arrested early Tuesday after climbing over a security fence into the grounds of Buckingham Palace, Queen Elizabeth II's official residence.
The suspect was unarmed and was in custody, London’s Metropolitan Police said.
“The breach is not believed to be terrorism-related,” it said in a news release.
The 22-year-old, from the south London suburb of Croydon, was spotted by officers monitoring surveillance cameras and arrested “within a security perimeter” at 4:15 a.m. local time (11:15 p.m. Monday ET).
A Taser was not needed to subdue him.
“The man, who had been drinking, did not gain access to the palace,” police said.
