A Malaysian man survived a car crash into a 60-foot ravine by crawling for three days through the jungle for help, officials said Friday. Nicholas Andrew, 33, was flung from his vehicle, breaking his right leg and wrist, after his car swerved off the road in heavy rain, local police chief Som Sak Din Keliaw told NBC News. His friend, identified by police as 34-year-old R. Thiyagarajan, was also in the car and was crushed and killed. The pair had been delivering wedding invitations from Tapah to Bidor, towns about 75 miles north of Kulala Lumpur, in the early hours of Sunday, Keliaw said. Andrew, a worker at Malaysia's Civil Defense Department, told police he remembered little of the accident and only regained consciousness hours later.
With the car hidden from the road by thick jungle and unable to find his friend, Andrew tried to climb back up the ravine. But his injuries were too severe and he decided to make the agonizing crawl through the dense terrain. "He moved very, very slowly and he told me he was scared," Keliaw said. Andrew survived by drinking water from an open drain, eating nothing and sleeping very little. Eventually on Wednesday he saw a man near a larger waterway and was rushed to Tapah Hospital where he was still in a stable condition Friday.
