Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius was freed from a South African prison Monday after serving less than a year behind bars for the 2013 shooting death of his girlfriend.
The double-amputee's lawyer, Brian Webber, confirmed the release to NBC News, adding that Pistorius was now staying at an uncle's house under correctional supervision.
Pistorius, 28, known as the "Blade Runner," is serving a five-year term for the killing of Reeva Steenkamp, a law graduate and model.
Plans for his release into house arrest was announced last week by a prison parole board.
A representative of Steenkamp's family said Pistorius' fate mattered little to them, because she was never coming back.
Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide — a charge similar to manslaughter — and found not guilty of murder after his defense team argued that he believed Steenkamp to be an intruder when he shot her on Valentine's Day 2013.
Pistorius entered prison Oct. 21, 2014.
The International Paralympic Committee said he would be barred from competition — including the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro — until he completed his sentence.
