Flight diverted after disoriented passenger tried opening exit door

A Philadelphia-bound US Airways flight was diverted to Boston on Thursday after a disoriented passenger confused an airplane exit for a lavatory door. The passenger has been taken into custody.

The passenger might have been suffering a seizure, a government source told NBC News.

The man was subdued by other passengers, said US Airways spokesperson Liz Landau. "The flight landed safely on the ground and there were no injuries," she added.

Air Wisconsin Flight 3801 was carrying 50 passengers and departed from Portland, Maine, Massport spokesperson Phil Orlandella said.

Air Wisconsin is an independently held regional airline that operates flights for US Airways.

Reporting from NBC News' Pete Williams and Jay Blackman is included in this report.
