A man and a woman posing as police officers were arrested at Los Angeles International Airport as they tried to board a plane with a gun, a spokeswoman for the airport police said on Saturday.

The two were arrested on Friday after they claimed to be officers with authority to transport a prisoner out of state and the woman told airport security staff that she was carrying a gun and produced paperwork “implying they were authorized to carry firearms onto an aircraft,” officer Belinda Nettles said in a statement.

Airport police made checks and discovered the two were not police officers and that the woman did not have a permit to carry the gun. Both were arrested for impersonating officers and the woman was also arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, Nettles said. She did not give their names.

Federal authorities are assisting with the investigation.
