Britain will donate an additional $20 million to Ethiopia for humanitarian relief, officials said.

A team will arrive Tuesday to assess the situation in the drought-hit country, said Douglas Alexander, Britian's international development secretary.

Food production in Ethiopia has been hurt by poor rain and crop failure. Rising global food prices have contributed to the hunger crisis.

Britain's International Development Department said the money would be spent on food and cash transfers to millions of vulnerable Ethiopians. The department has already donated $10 million toward food programs in the country.

Alexander said the Ethiopian government is expected to launch an emergency appeal this week.
