Texas Instruments Inc. and Samsung Electronics on Friday unveiled smartphones embedded with chips that enable projection viewing — devices the companies say can project videos and images larger than 50 inches, depending on surrounding light.
In a statement, the companies touted the phones — the Samsung W7900 and the I7410 — as the first cell phones that include a projector "in a contemporary form factor." They said the W7900 model will be sold in Korea starting in February, and the I7410 model will be sold in Europe shortly thereafter.
Both devices include Texas Instruments' DLP Pico chipset for media viewing, a 5-megapixel camera, a touchscreen and built-in speakers.
The companies did not give pricing information, or information regarding availability in the U.S. or other countries.
Texas Instruments shares rose 67 cents, or 4.2 percent, to $17.06 in morning trading.
