A man who is wanted by Spanish authorities in connection with a plot to assassinate the king of Spain was arrested in Britain on Thursday.
Eneko Gogeaskoetxea Arronategui of Spain was taken into custody for offenses that allegedly took place in 1997.
Gogeaskoetxea Arronategui also is wanted for allegedly participating in an armed gang, terrorism, possession of weapons, theft and forgery. He was detained following an early morning raid in Cambridge following an "intelligence-led" operation.
King Juan Carlos is believed to have been the target of foiled bomb plot at the opening of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao in 1997.
The plot was detected a day before the king attended the opening and no explosives went off.
The 44-year-old is believed to be a member of Basque separatist group ETA. He is due to appear at City of Westminster Magistrates Court later in the day for an extradition hearing.
Counter-terrorism detectives supported by local officers continued to search a home and two business addresses in Cambridge following the arrest.
