Apollo Creed famously warned Rocky to be a “thinker, not a stinker,” in the 1976 film of the same name, but the second annual “Battle of the Barristers” makes brawlers out of lawyers in lower Manhattan.

The charity fundraiser pits 20 assistant district attorneys, in matches at the Broad Street Ballroom, Thursday at 7 p.m. to benefit The Wounded Warrior Project , Gleason’s Give A Kid A Dream and New York Cares. Last year’s event raised more than $50,000 for The Wounded Warrior Project and Gleason’s Give A Kid A Dream.

Organizers added New York Cares as a recipient charity after Hurricane Sandy.

For the past 3 months the volunteer boxers have been putting in hours of training sessions at Trinity Boxing Club during the week and additionally giving up their Saturdays for mandatory workouts which included intense sparring sessions.

Just like other USA Boxing (the national governing body for Olympic-style amateur boxing) regulated events, officials overseeing the night’s matches carefully match two boxers of the same weight class and skill level to ensure a good and fair fight which consists of three, two minute rounds.
