Gazelles Blast Past Tigers

HURON -- The Yankton Gazelles bounced back from a season-opening loss to the defending state champions, routing Huron 54-28 in Eastern South Dakota Conference girls' basketball action Friday at the Huron Civic Arena.

"Our players took some lessons from that game (against Brookings) and got themselves prepared," said Yankton head coach Doug Pesicka. "Thursday was our best practice of the season."

Yankton took a 14-4 lead after one quarter, then stretched it to a 28-10 advantage at the break.

"We had to make it a full-court game," Pesicka said. "We disrupted their offense, took away their strengths."

Yankton's Andrea Walsh matched Huron's team total, hitting 11 of 12 from the field and all six from the line for a game-high 28 points. She also had five steals in the win.

Eight other Gazelles found the scoring column for the Gazelles, with Ketty Cornemann posting six and Ashley Sorenson and Michelle Wieseler posting five each. Cornemann, Wieseler and Kara Iverson each had five rebounds. Cornemann blocked three shots.

For Huron, Kristin Ramsell had seven points, all in the fourth quarter, and Amber DeBoer finished with six points and four rebounds.

Yankton, now 1-1 overall and in the ESD, hosts Mitchell in league action Tuesday.

In the JV contest, Huron pulled out a 42-30 victory.

Melissa Gause had six points and seven rebounds to lead Yankton. Emily Freng had six points and five rebounds.

The Gazelle sophomores picked up their first win of the season, beating the Tigers 35-27.

Kylie Gross had 13 points and seven rebounds to lead Yankton. Hannah Youngberg posted 12 points. Natalie Gross and Brittany Trimble each had five rebounds in the win.

Huron upended the Yankton freshmen ŒA' squad 44-30.

For Yankton, Karissa Bromley and Kalie Taylor each had six points and four rebounds.

The Gazelle freshmen ŒB' squad stayed perfect on the season with a 55-17 rout of the Tigers.

Cassie Olson had 20 points, Jena Mueller scored 14 points and Katie Wagner had 10 rebounds in the win.
