The daughter of former Paraguayan President Raul Cubas was found dead Wednesday night, months after she was abducted in the highest-profile kidnapping in this South American country.

Attorney General Oscar Latorre, speaking to Radio Mil, said the body of Cecilia Cubas had been found in a house on the outskirts of Asuncion and identified through dental records.

“Preliminary studies show that the body is that of Cecilia,” Latorre said. There was no immediate word on the cause of death. Officials said an autopsy would be performed.

Earlier in the evening, Raul Cubas and his wife, as well as President Nicanor Duarte, had rushed to the site as televised images showed 15 police officers digging in the yard of the house with the help of firefighters.

Cecilia Cubas was seized by heavily armed gunmen in a commando-style operation Sept. 21 as she drove near the family home in Asuncion.

Cubas served as president from August 1998 until March 1999. He was forced to resign when the assassination of his vice president triggered days of street rioting and political turmoil.
