Team Puerto Rico tennis star Mónica Puig won her semi-final match Friday, and now she is one step from winning the gold or silver medals at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
In Rio, Puig has taken single women's tennis by storm, beating Slovenia's Polona Hercog in three sets: 4-6, 6-1 and 3-6 in the semi-finals. She has also bested Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Spain's Garbine Muguruza and Germany's Laura Seigemund. Muguruza, the fourth-ranked player in the world and 2016 French Open champion was bested by Puig, 6-1, 6-1 in three sets.
Puig is 34th in the world, but her momentum at the Rio Olympics has pushed her to the semifinal rounds to best Team Czech Republic's Petra Kvitová.
Her progress and finals matches can be seen on NBC Olympics' broadcast Saturday at 5 p.m.".
Puig has solidified her standing as a silver medal Olympian, and Saturday she can bump up her standing to gold. She will play Team USA's Madison Keys or Germany's Angelique Kerber for silver or gold on Saturday for the final match.
