North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un spent a whirlwind weekend making public appearances around the country, days after the shock execution of his uncle exposed hitherto unseen rifts in his government.

A series of photographs released by the country's state news agency — the first to show Kim since the death of Jang Song Thaek — appear designed to convey a 'business as usual' message, demonstrating Kim's firm grip on power.

The images show Kim Jong Un visiting a military institute, a ski resort, and a fish factory, all in keeping with the long-standing propaganda message that he is deeply engaged in the business of running the country.

On Tuesday, events will be held to commemorate the second anniversary of the death of Kim's father, the late dictator Kim Jong Il.
