Olympic gymnastics icon Mary Lou Retton has returned home to recover after she was put in the intensive care unit last week for pneumonia, her family said.

"Mom is home and in recovery mode," Retton's daughter McKenna Lane Kelley announced Monday on Instagram. "We still have a long road of recovery ahead of us, but baby steps."

Kelley thanked doctors, nurses and Retton's community of fans for their support.

Another daughter, Shayla Kelley Schrepfer, told followers that Retton, a five-time Olympic medalist, suffered a "scary setback" in her fight against severe pneumonia last week.

"She had a better day today. She's just really, really exhausted," Schrepfer said in an Instagram video posted five days ago.

Retton, 55, lives in Houston. She was married to former University of Texas quarterback Shannon Kelley; they pair divorced in 2018.

The name of the hospital where Retton is being treated has not been disclosed. Her four daughters raised over $450,000 through a crowdfunding campaign to pay her hospital bill.

Retton was the first American woman to win an individual Olympics gold medal in gymnastics.
