Dramatic video shows the crash and ensuing fireball that enveloped a private plane that went down at the Aspen, Colo., airport this month, killing one person and injuring the two others on board.
The eerie, black-and-white video — recorded by five infrared cameras that monitor the ramps at Aspen/Pitkin County Airport — was provided to NBC News on Tuesday by Aspen Journalism, a nonprofit local news organization that obtained it under the Colorado Open Records Act.
Sergio Emilio Carranza Brabata, a co-pilot, was killed in the crash Jan. 5 of the Bombardier Challenger 600, which was flying to Aspen from Toluca in southern Mexico via Tucson, Ariz.
Moises Carranza, another co-pilot, was released from the hospital last week, while the third co-pilot, Miguel Henriqez, who was critically injured, remained hospitalized.
The video published Tuesday shows the engines firing just before the jet bounces off the runway and bursts into flames. It also shows a rescue vehicle arriving quickly at the crash site.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash, which occurred during overcast, blustery weather conditions.
