A volcano in western Mexico continued erupting Friday. The activity at the Colima Volcano — also known as the 'Volcano of Fire' — began Thursday, spewing ash more than 4 miles into the air and sending lava down its flanks.
The initial eruption occurred just after 11 a.m. local time on Thursday with ash falling to the southwest of the crater, according to a statement from Colima state's civil protection agency.
Colima is one of Mexico's most active volcanoes.
The director of Mexico's civil protection agency, Luis Felipe Puente, tweeted Friday that preventive protocols were activated.
People were advised to recognize a 3-mile perimeter around the volcano's peak. A state helicopter was sent on a reconnaissance flight on Friday morning.
