Democrats closing the gap in super PAC funds

After months of losing the super PAC money game to Republicans, the Democrats appear to be closing the gap as donations began to pour in over the summer.

In August, the pro-Obama Priorities USA super PAC outraised the Romney-favored Restore Our Future super PAC for the first time: $10.1 million to $7 million. Michael Isikoff, national investigative corresponded for NBC News, believes that trend will repeat in September and October.

"I think this trend you started to see in August, we're going to see big time in September when we get those numbers," he said during Daily Rundown Thursday.

He also recounted that one Democratic strategist had told him, "October is going to look like Christmas for the Democratic super PACs."

Some of those big donations have come from prominent trial lawyers like Peter Angelos, also owner of the Baltimore Orioles, who gave more than $1 million, and Steve Mostyn and wife Amber Mostyn, who gave more than $3 million.

Trial lawyers' political interests include the appointment of federal judges, including the multiple openings at the U.S. Court of Appeals and in federal District Courts.

Republican groups are still outspending Democrats as a whole, host Chuck Todd pointed out, given their head start on super PAC fundraising earlier in the year, which still dwarfs the Democrats' totals.
