Former bank bailout manager Neel Kashkari will run for governor in California.
"Today, the gift of a good education and the doors of opportunity it opens are out of reach for millions of struggling Californians," he said in a statement on his website. "That’s why I’m running for governor: To create jobs and give kids a quality education. Jobs and education. That’s it. That’s my platform."
Kashkari, 40, managed the federal government’s $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program during the banking crisis. He has also worked for Goldman Sachs and Pimco.
A moderate Republican, Kashkari hopes to unseat Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown, who has not formally announced his re-election bid but is widely expected to run again.
Tea Party favorite Tim Donnelly of San Bernardino is also vying for the job.
