Singer Ricky Martin paid tribute to President Obama for his recent shift on gay marriage.

While introducing the president at a New York City fundraiser the performer hosted Monday afternoon, Martin said, "We admire his courage, like the courage he showed last week in affirming his belief in marriage equality... that is the kind of courage we expect from our president and that is why we support him."

About 200 people attended, and tickets cost $5,000 per person. In attendance were among the city's high-powered gay politicos.

During his speech, Obama urged his supporters not to take the elections for granted. "This is going to be a tough race, a tight race. We can win, as long as you are activated and motivated."

He closed his speech saying,

I'm not a perfect man, and I'm not a perfect president... but I've always told you what I  thought and where I stood. And I wake up everyday thinking of how I can make your lives better -- and that every kid out there has the same kind of amazing possibilities that Malia and Sasha have. That promise I've kept. I believe in you and I hope you still believe in me.
