Two staffers at the U.S. Embassy in Caracas, Venezuela, were injured in a shooting outside a “social spot” early Tuesday, according to the State Department.
The unidentified embassy personnel sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the incident, which did not appear to have been politically motivated, according to officials.
The State Department has not yet identified the two wounded employees, but a spokesman confirmed that they were transferred to a local hospital.
“Embassy security and health unit personnel are at the hospital and have been in touch with the two individuals and their families,” State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said.
Ventrell did not provide details about the “social spot” where the shooting took place.
“I’m not sure if it was a restaurant, or a nightclub, or what the actual establishment was,” Ventrell said.
But Reuters and other news organizations reported the shooting happened during a fight at a strip club. Reuters reported that one of the staffers was shot in the leg and the other was wounded in the stomach.
Officials have not disclosed information about any potential suspect or suspects in the shooting.
