Outgoing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was hospitalized Thursday after he broke several ribs and facial bones in a fall caused by broken exercise equipment, his office says.

According to a statement, Reid was exercising at home in Henderson, Nevada, when a piece of equipment broke. An aide said that Reid was exercising with a resistance band that snapped, hitting him and causing him to fall.

"Senator Reid was first brought to St. Rose Dominican Hospital in Henderson by his security detail," said the senator's office. "He was then transferred to UMC for further testing, where he was admitted overnight as a precaution."

Reid is expected to make a full recovery and will be in Washington Tuesday when the Senate reconvenes for the New Year.

He was discharged from the hospital Friday afternoon and is "ready to get back to work," his office said.

The top Democrat is slated to be the Senate Minority Leader in the new Congress, as Republicans regained control of the Senate in the November elections.
