New MacBook Air, Lion OS due out next week?

It looks like we're closing in on the release of the new MacBook Air and Apple's latest operating system, Lion OS X, and both could be out as soon as next week.

Apple Store sources have told 9to5Mac that the stores will go into "overnight" mode July 13 to ready the stores for a fresh new look on July 14. As 9to5Mac points out, "Overnights are generally where Apple refreshes store displays and trains up management on new products. Sometimes it is big stuff and sometimes it is insignificant (at least to us)."

Previous reports have suggested Apple has an "internal launch date of July 19" for both products.

Apple's lightest laptop (the current 11-inch version weighs 2.3 pounds; the 13-inch model, 2.9 pounds) is due for a new version (the current model was released last October). Apple has yet to say anything officially about a new MacBook Air, but its minimal-storage options — 64 gigabytes or 128 gigabytes of flash storage — make it the poster child for Apple's new iCloud offerings, due to roll out this fall.

If a new MacBook Air shows up in Apple store windows next week, don't expect to find boxes of Lion there as well. Apple is only making the new $29.99 software available through Apple's online Mac App Store.
