Video-calling was enabled on the Skype for Android app quite a while ago, but unfortunately the feature wasn't supported on very many Android devices at that point. Well, that's changed! The latest Skype for Android update adds support for additional smartphones.
The Skype for Android 2.1 update is available through the Android Market and supports video-calling on the following devices:
- Samsung Google Nexus S
- Sony Ericsson Xperia neo
- Sony Ericsson Xperia pro
- HTC Desire SSamsung Galaxy S II
- Samsung Galaxy S
- Samsung Droid Charge - Verizon
- Samsung Galaxy Tab
- HTC Desire (2.2)
- HTC Thunderbolt - Verizon
- HTC Sensation
- HTC Evo 4G
- HTC Evo 3D
- HTC Incredible S
- HTC Desire HD
- HTC Flyer
- LG Revolution - Verizon (2.2)
- Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY
- Sony Ericsson Xperia ray
- Sony Ericsson Xperia mini pro
- Acer A5
But, oh no! What if your beloved Android phone isn't listed and you really want to make video-calls on it? You can! Skype confirms that those using Android 2.2 (Froyo) or greater on a device not listed can still enable video-calling in the app settings:
Please note that video call quality may not be as good as on a certified device. On Android 2.2 (Froyo), only the back camera will work. This is because only devices running Android OS 2.3 or higher allow apps to access the front facing camera. If the setting to enable video calling is not available in the Skype Settings on your device that means video calling is not yet supported on your phone.
