Xbox iPhone app gets remote control update

iPhone-toting Xbox fans will be pleased to hear that the Xbox Live app has gotten an update that allows for media playback controls. The game console is a popular and versatile media-playing machine, but sometimes you just don't feel like walking that 10 feet to grab a controller.

Version 1.5 adds a quickplay option that shows your most recent games and media, so you can pick up where you left off in "Gears of War" or "The Office," depending on your mood. There's also a new virtual controller that simulates Xbox controller input, allowing you to control playback and navigate menus with ease.

This is the functionality missing from the Windows Phone 7 version of the app, strangely. But considering Microsoft's big push of SmartGlass at E3, chances are that'll be taking over this more basic app once it's ready for deployment. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

You can download the new version of the app at the iTunes App Store.
