Two police officers shot during a struggle with a suspect outside an apartment complex died early Sunday, and a suspect was charged with murder, authorities said.

Sean Clark, 34, and Jeffrey Shelton, 35, were responding to a disturbance call at the apartment complex in Charlotte late Saturday. They were shot in the parking lot, and both died at a hospital, according to police.

“It’s a real tragedy for us, the officers, for the families, for the communities, that we’ve lost two in one incident,” said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Chief Darrel Stephens.

Neither officer fired his weapon, Stephens said.

Demetrius Antonio Montgomery, 25, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, said police spokesman Officer Bob Fey. It was not immediately known if he had an attorney.

Fey declined to say if there were other suspects in the case.

Clark had been with the police department for a year, and Shelton had worked there since 2001. Both officers were married. Clark and his wife were expecting a child.
